Familial Clouds

This installation, part of a collaboration with Simon Twose, was included in the ‘Traces of Centuries and Future Steps’ show at the Palazzo Bembo, as part of the 2012 Architecture Biennale di Venezia. This work was developed from Andrew’s previously published ‘family tree’ research project that had, for the first time, analyzed and presented the evolution of New Zealand architecture in the form of a family tree. To exhibit this research, we developed an innovative representational technique – tiny but detailed paper models creating a unique 3D diagram. This innovation also eliminated constraints typical of architectural exhibitions: they are usually complex, heavy and fragile, making them expensive to both produce and ship; in contrast, the ‘family tree’ was produced with close to zero material and shipping costs.
